Sam Wood’s hot chocolate helps fight inflammation

It’s the time of the year when we’re smack bang in the middle of winter, stress levels have peaked, and your immune system is looking a little weak.

To add to this, studies have shown that inflammation worsens during the cooler months, and when things get out of balance and inflammation becomes chronic, it can increase the risk of disease such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and worsen fatigue and joint pain.

With this in mind, the number one step to combatting inflammation is be eliminating foods high in sugar and sodium, processed foods, alcohol, dairy, and even red meat, which is quite achievable through a summer diet where vegetables and fruits are in peak season.

But if you’re suffering from symptoms of inflammation, eating an anti-inflammatory diet during winter doesn’t have to be difficult, nor does it mean you have to deprive yourself of your favourite winter comfort foods to beat the pain. In fact, all it takes is a warming cup of coco by the fire. Yep, not even kidding.

Packed with inflammation’s greatest enemy, turmeric, this hot chocolate is everything your body has been dying for. There’s also gut-loving cinnamon, ginger, and cayenne pepper, which not only make it taste extra delish, but work to boost your immunity.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried turmeric (depending on your taste)
  • pinch of cayenne pepper
  • pinch of cardamom (optional)
  • teaspoon rice malt syrup, to taste (we recommend no more than 1/2 teaspoon)
  • pinch of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk, warmed
  • 1/2 cup water

Method

1. Add raw cacao powder, dried spices, sea salt and pepper into a standard mug.

2. Fill mug halfway with boiling water and rice malt syrup and stir until powders dissolve.

3. Pour in warmed coconut milk and stir to combine. Serve.
