Jeff Goldblum is still hearing about that bizarre, yet classic, shirtless scene in 1993’s Jurassic Park.
Goldblum endured a public ribbing session while commemorating the 25th anniversary of director Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur classic. At issue: That unforgettable moment where Goldblum’s mathematician character Dr. Ian Malcolm took a sultry breather after a Tyrannosaurus Rex attack.with his shirt unbuttoned.
The odd moment has become a favorite Internet meme.
During the Jurassic Park panel discussion at Universal Studios Hollywood earlier this month, Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts asked Goldblum the question everyone wants to know: Just what he was thinking?
“There’s a shot in the movie, with your shirt unbuttoned,” Vogt-Roberts asks as the crowd goes a little wild. “You’re laying on your side. If I were to describe that frame, it would be ‘smoulder.’ I’m just curious, talk to me about shooting that shot…What did Steven say to you? DId you know what that frame looked like, how amazing that is?”

The good-natured Goldblum insisted he too wanted to know what happened 25 years ago. He deferred to fellow panelist and first assistant director John T. Kretchmer to finally answer just how that shot came about.
“I have no memory of it, I don’t think it was in the script that I was shirtless,” says Goldblum.”It must have been…”
But Kretchmer cuts him off, making clear whose idea losing the shirt was: “It was Jeff! He knew.”
Goldblum persists: “I swear, I don’t remember a conversation. Did I say, ‘Hey Steven, can I take my shirt off?’ What happened?”
“You just did it,” Kretchmer says, before playing to the crowd. “Because he’s a sex symbol.”
Hard to argue with that.
Who knows what Goldblum will bring to the franchise, or leave unbuttoned, when he stars in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
